Project 06

Magic Mouse CAD model.

The Magic Mouse is one continuous surface with no flat faces to start from, so I modeled it in SolidWorks with surfacing tools instead of normal extrudes.

Process

Building the shape

The whole body is built from curves first, then surfaced over them.

SolidWorks projected curve combining a top outline and a side profile
Top outline and side profile projected into one 3D curve.
Wireframe curve network defining the shell
Section curves added on reference planes.
Fill surface patching the top shell from the boundary curve
Fill surface across the boundary to make the top.
Surface loft with a tangency-to-face constraint building the side wall
Sides lofted tangent to the top so there is no visible edge.

Result

Finishing it

The surfaces are knit into one body, thickened into a shell, and the edges filleted. The Apple logo is a split line on the top face.
